New Museum and Visitor Center

After 58 years at its current location, the Bastrop County Historical Society is poised to move into the heart of the City's historical commercial district at Main and Pine. More than a change of address, this is our community's historical moment to better convey Bastrop's Story to a new generation and reflects years of dreaming and planning by its local leaders, and the Society's Board of Trustees, staff and volunteers.

In 2011, after City government has relocated to its new building on Chestnut Street, the former City Hall, which has been the seat of local government since 1920, will be redeveloped and expanded into the Museum and Visitor Center.  The new facility will bring under one roof the current Museum (at 702 Main) and the Bastrop Old Town Visitor Center (at 1016 Main)...and the combination will be more than the sum of its parts.

The new Museum and Visitor Center will serve as a community gathering point day-to-day, and be readily accessible during Bastrop's many special downtown events. You will find more visitor services at the Center, such as 24-hour displays in the front plaza informing you of local attractions.  In the Museum, there will be new exhibits on Bastrop's unique and regionally significant heritage, and an enlarged historical archive.  The new location will provide closer access to downtown shops and to the Colorado River walk.

As designs are finalized in 2010, the Society will continue fundraising to make this vision a reality. The goal is $1,250,000. The City of Bastrop has committed $500,000 for renovations in addition to providing the building to the Society on a long-term lease. A Federal appropriation of $200,000 initiated by Congressman Lloyd Doggett has been approved.

We have raised an additional $350,000 in pledges and commitments with $200,000 remaining. Your pledge will carry Bastrop's remarkable and unique history forward into the future.  This is simply your historical moment to join that effort.
