The Bastrop County Historical Museum is located at 702 Main Street, just one block south of Bastrop's historic downtown business district and in close proximity to Bastrop's historic neighborhoods. The Museum's downtown location is easily accessible from any direction:
Driving directions:
from Smithville and Houston [Hwy 71 W]: Exit Hwy 71 at "Loop 150 /Hasler" and stay on the access road to the Loop 150 stop light. Turn right onto Loop 150, proceed across the bridge and turn right onto Main Street, the first light after the bridge. Continue south on Main Street for three blocks, and the museum will be on your right.
from Austin [Hwy 71 E]: Exit at Loop 150/Hasler and stay on the access road to the stop light (at Loop 150). Turn left onto Loop 150, proceed across the bridge and turn right onto Main Street, first light after the bridge. Continue on Main Street for three blocks, and the museum will be on your right.
from Elgin [Hwy 95 S]: Turn right at the four-way stop light at Loop 150/Chestnut Street. Proceed west on Chestnut to the second light (Main Street) and turn left onto Main. Continue on Main Street for three blocks, and the museum will be on your right.
from Paige and Caldwell [Hwy 21 E]: Hwy 21 will take you directly into downtown Bastrop. After you cross the intersection with Hwy 95, the road is also designated Chestnut Street. Proceed west on Chestnut to the second stop light and turn left onto Main. Continue on Main Street for three blocks, and the museum will be on your right.
General Information
The Museum is open seven days a week throughout the year, with the exception of December 25 through January 1. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 1 to 5 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
All exhibit areas are wheelchair accessible. Children under 15 must be accompanied by an adult. Admission is $2 and children under 12 are admitted free.
Special Tours
Group tours of the Museum are available by appointment and may be scheduled during the usual hours of operation. School and youth groups must be accompanied by at least one adult chaperone for each five students.
Museum staff and volunteers are available, by prior arrangement, to conduct a "Step On Tour" in which a guide will join your group and direct your driver through the historical district while he or she relates the history of many of the historic homes and other significant landmarks.
